· Dupont employees in the fitness program used 14 % fewer disability days.
· Program participants at Northern Gas Co. have 80% fewer sick days.
· Canadian Life Assurance Company demonstrated 32.4% lower turnover rate in wellness program participants vs non participants. Resulting in significantly reduced recruitment costs.
· General Electric reduced health care costs 38% in an 18 month period for participants of a fitness program.
· At Steelecase medical claims were 55% lower for fitness participants than non-participants.
Research done specifically on On-Site Physiotherapy indicates significant cost savings with speedier return to work outcomes.
· Ford Motor Car Company implemented an On-Site Physiotherapy Program at the St. Thomas assembly plant and demonstrated a cost savings of over 3.6 million dollars during the period of December 1988 to December 1991. Based on the success of this program On-Site Physiotherapy facilities were opened at the Oakville Assembly Plant and the Ontario Truck Plant.
· The NYNEX company studied the effectiveness or their On-Site Physiotherapy Program. The data showed the mean lost days for patients treated in house was 140 compared with the 489 mean lost days for patients treated elsewhere. A statistically significant difference, which translated into a total savings of $69,800 in one year, not including indirect costs for overtime, replacement, and adverse effects on coworkers morale.
· A study by Linz et al found occupational medicine center based physiotherapy had 45% less mean number of visits then the national benchmark. This resulted in an approximate savings of 1.4 million dollars to three employers in one year.
· BC Hydro found, not only did On-Site Physiotherapy result in an earlier return to work it saved over 100,000 dollars per year by eliminating the need for workers to leave their jobs for two hours per appointment day to attend outside physiotherapy.
At Ergomed Solutions we maintain our own statistics for each client. Our data demonstrates the significant savings that can be realized by the On-Site Physiotherapy Program.
At one of our clients, the Physiotherapy Program manages numerous occupational and non-occupational injuries. It was determined from our data and file reviews, that 46 employees of the nearly 200 patients seen in 2004 had either potential for lost time or had shortened lost time periods due to the Physiotherapy Program intervention.
If these 46 employees had the estimated 92 weeks of potential lost time saved, this would translate into a cost savings of wage replacement of 92 weeks x $900/week (based on an average gross salary of $45,000), which would equal a potential cost saving of $82,800.00
Additional factors which would increase the cost savings total, but are difficult to quantify with a dollar value are: loss of production within the department, replacement workers wage cost/overtime, employee morale and employee health benefit cost savings.
