Custom Orthotic Evaluation and Orthopedic Footwear
The structure of your foot supports your entire body. Any misalignment of muscles and bones whether large or small can cause any of the following problems:
If you are experiencing pain in an area that does not resolve, the origins may be biomechanical in nature, in which case an orthotic device may be helpful. You may also require an exercise program to address these imbalances. Since orthotic devices can work in a preventative fashion to avoid future foot problems they may be indicated in some cases even though you are not experiencing pain. An example of this is when the foot rolls in or flattens (pronates) excessively which can lead to problems in the future.
At The Sports Rehabilitation Institute, specially trained physiotherapists will perform a gait analysis and analyze how your foot functions with walking and standing. Several short diagnostic assessment tests are done to determine your specific foot type and determine to a precise degree where and how much correction is required. A foam impression of the foot is made and is form fitted to the foot which is manufactured into an insert which is worn comfortably in most types of shoes or can be manufactured into special soles of a custom shoe.
Its purpose is to prevent abnormal motion of the foot while allowing for normal motion, and to reduce stress and strain on the ankles, knees, hips and low back. An orthosis is designed to control the mechanics of the foot to a precise degree - during the entire gait cycle. OHIP does not cover the cost of orthotic devices even though they are medically necessary and act to prevent future foot problems. Most extended health group insurance plans do cover orthotics either partially or fully. The cost is a reflection of the biomechanical examination and gait analysis, casting procedure, laboratory fees, and follow-up adjustment visits. Your insurance company may require a doctors prescription for them to be covered. |
